The Gail Gensler Style Guide

Updated: Mar 1, 2021

When you look good, you feel good, as they say (have I mentioned that I love quotes?). Feeling good is often as simple as picking out an outfit you feel is flattering on you. Full disclosure: I feel my best in workout attire. However, I do appreciate the value of having a well-constructed wardrobe for a variety of occasions and trends. Here’s my style guide, which helps me look my best…

Invest in Timeless Pieces

I know it can be tempting to splurge on a trendy bag or shoes. Believe me, I understand the struggle. There’s one thing you should always consider, though; trends are meant to end. What happens when they’re over? You’ve now probably spent over $1,000 on something that was only temporarily in style. That’s why I choose to spend big on the timeless pieces.

Watches, belts, and purses are often timeless. You can wear them today, tomorrow, and in a year from now, and they will still work for you and your look. This is why I invest in pieces I know will always be classics. I know my money is going to something that will last, instead of making pricey, short-term style purchases.

Be Savvy with Trendy Pieces

I’m not saying I don’t also love to follow the trends. I like to stay up to date too! When it comes to shopping, though, I try to be frugal when I know I’m buying something trendy. If this trend proves that it is here to last, great! Maybe I’ll invest in something I can own for a long time. But until that time, you can find me bargain hunting for the latest and greatest style pieces, possibly at Bloomingdale’s (my all-time favorite store).

Find “Your Look”

Everyone has a specific look that makes them feel great. Sometimes it takes a little while to find it, but once you do, you can tailor your entire wardrobe around that specific aesthetic you are trying to achieve.

As I said, I am most comfortable as a 59-year-old getting after it in the gym in her workout attire! But when I do decide to dress up, you can usually find me in some array of black, grey, and/or blue. I prefer to wear jeans (another timeless item of clothing), though I will absolutely wear a dress if I feel like it.

I also dress for the seasons, even though there really aren’t any in South Florida; must be the New Yorker in me! I dress for the summer heat as long as I can, but come fall, I just have to change it up. Fall and winter are my favorite fashion seasons after all! I just can’t wear sandals all year.

Be You!

In the end, the only goal of your wardrobe and style guide is to make yourself feel good. If a certain outfit makes you confident in your own skin, throw it on! That’s all that matters. Doesn’t matter if you’re 29, 39, 49, or 59 like me; fashion empowers us all. As Martha Beck said: “Although beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, the feeling of being beautiful exists solely in the mind of the beheld.”
